Will CrossFit Make You Bulky? Nope!
By Ben Smith
This is one of the most frequent questions we get asked, and mostly by women. Hopefully this post will clear things up!
The simple answer to this popular question is: NO. But before we dive into why the answer is no, it’s important to clarify that everyone’s perception of “bulky” is different. If your goal is to look like a size 00 runway model with no muscle definition, then CrossFit probably isn’t for you. Likewise, if you’re going for the exaggerated super hero type of physique, then CrossFit isn’t for you either.
It’s a scientific fact, like it or not, that women’s bodies are just not capable of muscle development in the way that a man’s body is. The genetic make-up, including the amount of testosterone produced, is drastically different in men and women.
Getting bulky doesn’t happen by accident.
Women with massive muscles are most likely using hormone therapy to accomplish that, and eating and lifting for the sole purpose of bulking up – and have less of a concern with overall fitness level.
So yes, lifting heavy weights, will develop muscle, but not in a way that makes you look like a body builder. It will make you look toned, curvy, and still feminine, with muscle definition and increased overall fitness levels. If you need more motivation to focus on building a little extra muscle, remember this: muscle burns more calories, even at rest, than fat. In fact, according to Christopher Wharton, PhD, certified personal trainer and researcher with the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, 10 pounds of muscle would burn 50 calories in a day spent at rest, while 10 pounds of fat would burn 20 calories.
What truly creates bulk is a lack of exercise and a poor diet. Doing CrossFit and focusing on eating clean will not make you bulky, but it will make you fit, toned, and more confident, just to name a few of the benefits.
